As Seamus Coleman announces he will leave Everton this summer, BBC Sport looks at the rise of the £60,000 signing who became a club legend.

In the world of football, some transfers define an era. When Seamus Coleman arrived at Everton for a mere £60,000 from Irish side Sligo Rovers, few could have predicted the legend he would become. Now, after 433 appearances in the royal blue jersey, the Republic of Ireland full-back has announced he will leave the club this summer when his contract expires. At roughly £140 per game, it stands as one of the Premier League's greatest bargains.

But Coleman's journey to Goodison Park was never a straightforward fairytale. It began in the small fishing town of Killybegs, County Donegal, nestled along Ireland's stunning Wild Atlantic Way with a population of just 1,250. Here, a young Coleman honed his craft not on pristine academy pitches, but on the streets of his estate, playing against older, tougher competition.

"Early life for a lot of the young lads, including Seamus, would have been school and football. They played everywhere," recalls Brian Dorrian, the manager who helped shape Coleman's early career at local club St Catherine's. In Killybegs, football and Gaelic football were king, and Coleman played both. The matches between local estates were fierce affairs. "You didn't get beat in those, it was like going to war with your neighbours," Dorrian adds. "That is where he learned his traits. Playing against older players, getting kicked. It built hunger and the drive to do well."

From those humble beginnings, Coleman developed into a tenacious, big-hearted player who would go on to embody the spirit of Everton Football Club. His legacy is not just about the numbers—it's about the journey from street football to club captain, proving that sometimes the best investments come in the most unassuming packages.
