As the Los Angeles Lakers finalize their preparations for a high-stakes playoff opener against the Houston Rockets this Saturday, a single word has become the team's mantra: hyperfocus. Head coach JJ Redick emphasized this mindset following the team's second intense postseason practice, signaling a squad that is dialed in and ready for the challenge.

"We're just trying to be hyperfocused right now," Redick stated. "That's been the word of the day for the last couple of days, elevating our focus. We've had two fantastic practices." This heightened concentration will be critical, especially with the Lakers facing the first round without their top two scorers, Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, who are out indefinitely.

The challenge ahead is formidable. The Rockets have built their identity this season on relentless physicality, particularly on the glass. Houston finished the regular season as the NBA's top rebounding team, leading the league with an average of 15.0 offensive rebounds per game. This prowess directly fuels their offense, making them the third-best second-chance scoring team at 17.8 points per game.

Coach Redick was direct in his assessment of the Rockets' tenacity. "Rebounding is a part of their DNA. It's part of each piece of the players' DNA. They've collected a bunch of guys that play like banshees and they crash," he said. In response, the Lakers have made boxing out and controlling the boards a central focus of their practice sessions this week.

Veteran forward Rui Hachimura, now in his fourth playoff run with the Lakers, understands the importance of setting an immediate tone, especially with home-court advantage on the line. "We got to get the first one," Hachimura asserted. "We got to set the tone and bring everything."

Adding to the team's energy is center DeAndre Ayton, who is buzzing with anticipation for his first playoff game in Purple and Gold—and his first postseason action since 2022. "I'm thinking about the environment, the fans, playing the first game as a Laker in the playoffs," Ayton shared with palpable excitement. "I am truly excited, I want to do backflips." Ayton brings valuable stability, having played a career-high 72 games this season while averaging 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.
