The Geno Smith trade officially came full circle at the 2026 NFL Draft, closing the book on a deal that sent the veteran quarterback back to the New York Jets earlier this offseason. With the draft now in the rearview mirror, teams are busy integrating their rookie classes, but the event also served as the final chapter for several pick-swap agreements—including this one.
The Jets used the final pick of the draft, selection No. 228, to take Kansas State safety VJ Payne. That selection was the last piece of the trade that brought Smith back to New York from the Las Vegas Raiders. It was a move that seemed promising at first, given Smith's three solid seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and the two-year, $75 million extension he signed with Vegas upon the trade. But the reality was far different.
Smith's 2025 season with the Raiders was a major disappointment. He threw for just over 3,000 yards and 19 touchdowns, but his 17 interceptions marked his highest single-season total since his rookie year in 2013. The Raiders quickly realized the deal was a bust, setting the stage for the Jets to bring Smith back into the fold.
As for the rest of the trade's draft capital, the Jets also sent pick No. 208 and No. 134 to move up to No. 122, where they selected Arizona running back Mike Washington Jr. The full picture of the deal is now clear, and while Smith's second stint in New York remains to be seen, the draft picks have officially been settled.
