The winds of change are blowing through Anfield, and it looks like Joe Gomez's long chapter with Liverpool may be reaching its final pages. The Reds have reportedly made an initial move for Paris FC defender Mamadou Mbow, signaling what many believe is the beginning of the end for the club's longest-serving player.

Gomez, now 28, is entering the final year of his contract, and the writing has been on the wall for some time. He came close to leaving last summer, and sources say he would have been on his way out if the club had successfully secured Marc Guehi. That deal fell through, keeping the versatile defender on Merseyside—but only temporarily.

This summer feels different. Liverpool have already added young defender Jeremy Jacquet to the ranks, and now they're targeting Mbow, a 26-year-old centre-back from Paris FC. At 26, Mbow would be a senior signing by Liverpool's recent standards—not a project player for the future, but someone ready to contribute immediately.

What does this mean for Gomez? The writing is clear. Mbow isn't coming in to displace Ibrahima Konate as a regular starter. Instead, he's being brought in as a reliable squad rotation option—exactly the role Gomez has filled for much of his Liverpool career. It's a direct replacement, and it almost certainly signals that Gomez's time is up.

Under Arne Slot this season, Gomez has made 18 Premier League appearances, logging 519 minutes and providing two assists. His involvement has been primarily as a substitute, including a brief three-minute cameo in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on April 25. He was an unused substitute in the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on May 3. Minor fitness issues have continued to plague him, including a curious incident in the Champions League loss to PSG on April 14, where he was substituted just 22 minutes after coming on, reportedly unable to maintain high-intensity sprinting.

For a player who has given nearly a decade of service to the club, it's a bittersweet moment. Gomez remains a valued homegrown talent, but with a summer defensive overhaul on the horizon, it appears the Reds are ready to move on. As they say in football: all good things must come to an end.
