Every Wales squad announcement brings a mix of joy and heartbreak—and this week's selection is no different. Head coach Steve Tandy has named a 48-man squad for four summer fixtures, kicking off with a non-cap international against the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on June 27. After that, Tandy will trim the roster for Nations Championship clashes against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa.
The squad features six uncapped players and a returning British and Irish Lion, flanker Jac Morgan, while several familiar faces have missed out. Among the newcomers, Exeter back-rower Kane James stands out as the most exciting call-up. Born and raised in Wales, the 21-year-old moved to England at 16 for his education and played for England Under-20s in 2024, winning the age-grade world championship. Now, he's chosen Wales—a decision that will make him ineligible for Steve Borthwick's England side once he earns his first cap.
James is one of 14 England-based players in Tandy's squad, a number set to grow next season when Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake join Gloucester, and Aaron Wainwright moves to Leicester. Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter acknowledges the challenge this poses for his club, which relies on England-qualified player (EQP) quotas. "We view Kane as a frontline player this season, but you also want a team with international players," Baxter says. "Managing our EQP numbers will be tough, but that's what we have to do." His more immediate concern? James hasn't played since an ankle injury in the Challenge Cup win—so fitness will be key as the young star prepares for his Wales debut.
