The Daily: Griffins Must Solve Moose Goalie; Postava’s Impressive Season

The Grand Rapids Griffins are facing a goaltending conundrum—and the solution could define their playoff series against the Manitoba Moose. After dominating the regular-season matchup, the Griffins now find themselves locked in a battle with a transformed netminder who seems to have found a new gear when it matters most.

Domenic DiVincentiis, the Winnipeg Jets' seventh-round pick, was a different goalie during the regular season. Back then, he posted a 3.03 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage, going 1-3 against Grand Rapids. In those three losses, he allowed 12 goals on 75 shots—a shaky .840 save percentage. Fast forward to the playoffs, and DiVincentiis has been reborn: a 1.02 GAA and a .968 save percentage, including 69 saves on 71 shots in the first two games of this series. The Griffins' mission for Wednesday's Game 3 in Grand Rapids is clear: crack the code on his postseason magic.

On paper, the Griffins have every reason to believe they can. They went 6-1-1-0 against Manitoba in the regular season, averaging 3.54 goals per game compared to the Moose's 2.57. Grand Rapids scored 70 more goals than Manitoba this season. But right now, this series has turned into a goaltending duel between DiVincentiis and Grand Rapids' Michal Postava—and Postava has been equally impressive. The Red Wings prospect has stopped 52 of 53 shots through two games, posting a 2-0 record. If the Griffins can ignite their offense, this series tilts heavily in their favor.

Beyond the crease battle, there's plenty of movement in the Red Wings' pipeline. Bob Duff examines Detroit's second-round draft history, while the Griffins have signed 2023 draft pick Noah Dower-Nilsson to a professional tryout. And prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is making a strong case to earn a full-time spot with the Red Wings next fall.

For now, all eyes are on Grand Rapids. The Griffins have the firepower. The question is whether they can solve a goalie who's no longer the same player they faced in October.
