The NHL has long celebrated a tradition of players outperforming their reputation, or their histories, in the NHL postseason. Checkers become scorers. Fourth liners play like first liners. Young defensemen play like 10-year veterans. Second string goalies perform like All-Stars.

Former Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon, a journeyman veteran, now with the Sabres, is one of the biggest surprises in the first round.

Thus far, Lyon has played four games, totaled 203 minutes of playing time, and has posted a 1.18 goals-against average and .953 save percentage. He has faced 85 shots on goal and given up four goals. He was sharp again Tuesday when he made 27 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins.

Alan Greenberg wrote a story for Florida Hockey Now suggesting Lyon’s performance isn’t a surprise to Florida fans who remember Lyon stepping up and playing well in big games down the stretch when Sergei Bobrovsky down the stretch in 2023.

Carter Bear produced an assist, and was plus-2, in the Everett Silvertips’ 4-2 win against the Penticton Vees in Game 4 of their Western Hockey League playoff series. The win completed the Everett sweep over Penticton. Bear shows three goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 13 games.
