Donovan Mitchell wasn't happy. After the Cleveland Cavaliers' Game 1 loss to the Detroit Pistons, the star guard pointed to a glaring issue: he attempted just two free throws all night. "I'm just not getting the calls," Mitchell said. "I don't know why. I don't flop, maybe that's why. … It's frustrating a little bit because I'm such a dynamic driver."
And that's the problem. Mitchell *is* a dynamic driver—or at least, he has been. This postseason, that version of him has been hard to find. Through eight playoff games, only 22% of his shots have come in the restricted area, a mark that lands in the 40th percentile league-wide. During the regular season, that number was 24% (54th percentile). Last postseason? It was 30% (74th percentile). That's a steep drop-off, and it was on full display against Detroit.
In Game 1, nine of Mitchell's 19 shots came from inside the paint, but just one of those was at the rim. The rest? They were rushed, hesitant attempts from five to 10 feet—shots taken before contact could even happen. In six of his eight paint attempts, you can see him either shy away from a defender or release the ball early to avoid a bump. That's not the aggressive, downhill attack that makes Mitchell so dangerous.
Getting to the line doesn't always mean getting to the rim. Just ask James Harden, who had nine free-throw attempts in Game 1 despite not being the same athlete he once was. The difference? Harden is intentional about initiating contact. He doesn't flinch. He's the aggressor. That mindset—more than athleticism—is what has kept him at the free-throw line year after year.
Mitchell's struggles also highlight a bigger issue: Cleveland's lack of spacing. The Cavs' defense relies heavily on the trio of Dean Wade, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. But offensively, that same group can clog the paint, making it harder for Mitchell to find driving lanes and finish through contact. If the Cavaliers want to make a deep run, they need their star guard to get back to being the driver defenses fear—not the one who pulls up before the bump.
