The AI fitness instructors selling unreal gains

A BBC Sport investigation finds misleading adverts for fitness apps that use AI-generated instructors to make exaggerated claims.

Have you scrolled past those impossibly perfect fitness videos on your social feed? You know the ones—chiseled bodies, dramatic before-and-after shots, and promises of looking "20 years younger" in just weeks. A BBC Sport investigation has uncovered a troubling trend: many of these polished advertisements are using AI-generated instructors to sell fitness app subscriptions, often in violation of UK advertising rules.

These AI characters claim to have followed the very workout programs they're promoting. They showcase transformations that experts say are scientifically implausible in such short timeframes—like losing 40 pounds in a month. But here's the kicker: most of these ads fail to disclose that the "instructors" aren't real people at all.

So why does this matter? Because once you engage with fitness content, algorithms flood your feed with similar material. AI characters can produce endless content, and unlike human influencers, you can't simply opt out. "It's impossible to stop your feeds being proliferated with this material," says Prof Andy Miah, an AI expert from the University of Salford.

The issue goes beyond deception. These ads prey on people seeking genuine health and fitness advice—looking for solutions to improve their bodies and confidence. But the claims about how quickly you can make gains are completely unrealistic. "That feeds false hope and creates damaging expectations," Prof Miah warns, describing the current regulatory landscape as a "wild west."

For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, trust is everything—whether you're choosing a workout plan or the gear to support it. As AI continues to blur the lines between real and fabricated, it's more important than ever to look for authentic sources, transparent claims, and programs backed by real expertise. After all, sustainable gains aren't made in weeks—they're built with consistency, proper nutrition, and the right equipment that supports your journey every step of the way.
