The ABS system has been making waves across baseball, and the Philadelphia Phillies have had their fair share of memorable moments with it. While Joe Edinger recently gave us the big picture on how the team fared through the first month, it's time to zoom in on the drama, the bold moves, and the outright head-scratchers. Welcome to the ABS Awards—where the prizes are bragging rights, and the dress code is strictly casual.

Statcast tracks every pitch's likelihood of being challenged, factoring in game situation, count, and leverage. This data reveals who dared to defy the odds and file the most audacious challenge of the month. Enter Bryce Harper. In a low-leverage spot early in a game, with the Phillies leading and Harper ahead 3-1 in the count, he decided to question a pitch that just nicked the edge of the zone. Statcast gave it just a 3% chance of being challenged. Harper fouled off the next pitch and whiffed on the one after, turning a potential walk into a strikeout. A tough break on the field, but he walks away with our first "Maverick" award.

But Harper's challenge was practically a sure bet compared to what Tanner Banks attempted. With the Phillies trailing by two in the eighth inning, Banks delivered a pitch to Ronald Acuña Jr. that was over three inches above the strike zone. Catcher Rafael Marchán, however, misjudged the location and called for a review. Statcast gave it less than a 1% chance of being challenged—making it the most unlikely challenge of the month. As Groucho Marx once said, "I've had a lovely evening, but this wasn't it."

The Phillies, like most teams, have been cautious about letting pitchers challenge calls—league-wide data shows pitchers simply aren't as effective at it as position players. But when the stakes are high and the odds are low, sometimes you just have to swing for the fences. Whether it's Harper's calculated gamble or Marchán's misread, the ABS system has brought a new layer of strategy—and entertainment—to the game. Here's to more bold challenges and unforgettable moments on the diamond.
