The 400-game stalwart hunting a fairytale finish in SRC

Lee Rees will bring an end to his Llandovery career after 402 games when facing Ebbw Vale in Sunday's Super Rygbi Cymru final at Eugene Cross Park.

For nearly two decades, Lee Rees has been the steady heartbeat of Llandovery RFC. Now, after 402 appearances, the 35-year-old scrum-half is writing the final chapter of a remarkable career—and it reads like a fairytale.

This Sunday, Rees will lead the Drovers onto the pitch at Eugene Cross Park for the Super Rygbi Cymru (SRC) final against Ebbw Vale. It's a fitting stage for a player who first pulled on the Llandovery jersey in August 2008, when the current lock Kai Jones was just celebrating his first birthday.

Back then, Rees started as a full-back or wing, and his small frame drew jokes from the terraces. But opponents quickly learned that this player fights well above his weight. Over the years, as the Welsh Rugby Union tinkered with everything from bonus points to league formats, Rees remained the one constant—a reassuring presence in an ever-changing game.

"It's a privilege to go out this way, injury-free and feeling good," says Rees, who announced his retirement in February. "There would be no better way to finish than winning at Ebbw Vale—it's one of the hardest places to play."

The Drovers arrive in form, fresh from a 30-22 semi-final victory over Cardiff. Though they finished fourth in the league, this squad blends seasoned experience with Scarlets talent, making them a dangerous underdog. For Rees, who also serves as head of girls rugby at Llandovery College, the stakes couldn't be higher.

"It's been a transition year, with the team changing a lot. If we pull this off, it would be our best trophy win yet," he says. "Ebbw Vale are strong up front and know their game plan, but we're ready."

After 402 games, one last battle awaits. And for Lee Rees, there's no script more perfect than this.
