Friday night was a showcase of resilience and emerging talent across the Detroit Tigers' farm system, with standout performances and encouraging rehab updates stealing the spotlight.
In Triple-A Toledo, the big story was the continued recovery of key arms. Beau Brieske took the mound as part of his rehab progression, showing flashes of his pre-injury form. After surrendering a run in the first inning, he settled in for a clean second frame, sitting at 95.9 mph with his four-seamer and mixing in effective changeups. He looks close to rejoining the Tigers' bullpen. Will Vest also made a strong step forward, thankfully avoiding any tendon or ligament damage. He tossed a perfect third inning, averaging 95.8 mph and striking out one. Another outing may be needed before he's ready for Detroit, but the signs are promising.
The offense gave the rehabbers some support in the second inning, as Corey Julks singled and came around to score on a Tyler Gentry base hit, tying the game at 1-1. The score remained knotted until the fifth, when top prospect Max Clark reached on an infield single and Eduardo Valencia launched a two-run homer to left-center, giving Toledo the lead for good. Troy Watson took over after the rehab work and allowed just one run over five innings. In the ninth, Matt Seelinger earned the save in dramatic fashion, striking out Kameron Misner with cutters and blowing a fastball past Drew Waters after a tense at-bat. The series resumes Saturday at 8:05 p.m. ET.
Down in Double-A Erie, the SeaWolves found themselves in an early hole but roared back thanks to the red-hot bat of Thayron Liranzo. Starter Max Alba struggled in the second inning, allowing three runs, but settled in to pitch into the fifth without further damage. The comeback began in the third when catcher Bennett Lee doubled, took third on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from John Peck after walks from Brett Callahan and Peyton Graham loaded the bases. Then Liranzo stepped in against lefty Cesar Perdomo and, for the second straight day, crushed a three-run homer to left field, putting Erie ahead 4-3. The bullpen made the lead stand, and the SeaWolves held on for the win.
