Texas Tech football just got a significant boost to its defensive line depth chart. Head coach Joey McGuire shared encouraging news on Monday regarding defensive lineman Jayden Cofield's recovery from a partial Achilles tear.

Initially, the injury was expected to sideline Cofield for the first half of the 2026 season, a prognosis that directly influenced the Red Raiders' strategy in the January transfer portal. The staff added an extra defensive lineman, planning for a lengthy absence. Now, that timeline has been dramatically accelerated.

Coach McGuire revealed that Cofield is progressing far ahead of schedule and could potentially return as early as the Houston game on September 18th. If not then, he's targeting a comeback for the Sam Houston State matchup on September 26th.

"He's a lot farther ahead than what we expected," McGuire stated, emphasizing the positive ripple effect on the team's roster. "That just adds depth. When you start looking at it, we're going to have a legit three-deep at both defensive tackles with the guys that we have going through spring and then you add Cofield back in it."
