Blake Gideon is back where he belongs. After a brief stint as defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, the former Longhorn standout has returned to Austin for his third tour with Texas football—this time as the team's defensive backs coach.
It's a homecoming that feels right to everyone involved. Gideon, who grew up in nearby Leander, first made his mark in burnt orange as a player from 2008-2011, starting 52 games in the secondary and earning multiple Big 12 All-Conference honorable mentions. He later served on Steve Sarkisian's first coaching staff from 2021-2024 before chasing the coordinator opportunity at Georgia Tech.
That experience, though brief, proved invaluable. The Yellow Jackets went 9-4 and reached the Pop-Tarts Bowl, but their defense ranked 92nd nationally in total yards allowed (399.2 per game) and 69th in scoring defense (25.0 points). Gideon is the first to admit he learned some hard lessons. "In retrospect, there are things I would have done differently when it comes to schematics," he reflected.
Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, never one to mince words, offered a blunt assessment: "He's a lot better coach than player." It was said in jest, but Gideon didn't shy away from the comparison. "If I'm watching a recruit's tape and somebody says, 'That's the next Blake Gideon,' I'm probably not going to recruit him," he fired back with a grin.
Self-deprecating humor aside, Gideon's playing career was nothing to scoff at. But if he's truly an even better coach, that's a major win for the Longhorns' secondary. Safety Jelani McDonald put it simply: "Just having my guy back in that burnt orange was good spiritually. He knows the ins and outs of playing defense as a safety. He's intelligent. He knows what he's talking about."
For Texas fans, seeing Gideon back on the sideline feels like a full-circle moment. For the players in his position room, it means learning from someone who has walked the walk—and now, knows exactly how to teach it.
