Texas A&M baseball continues to make headlines this spring, as yet another former Aggie is on the move. Over the weekend, infielder Braden Shewmake was traded from the New York Yankees organization to the Houston Astros in exchange for pitcher Wilmy Sanchez, bringing the former Aggie standout back to Texas.

Shewmake put together one of the most decorated careers in Texas A&M history. As a freshman in 2017, he was named SEC Freshman of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Freshman of the Year, and earned All‑American honors. Across three seasons in College Station, he posted an impressive .323/.381/.487 slash line with 40 home runs and 161 RBI, cementing himself as one of the program’s most productive hitters.

The Atlanta Braves selected Shewmake 21st overall in the 2019 MLB Draft, and he quickly climbed the minor‑league ladder. After a strong stint in Single‑A, he finished his debut season in Double‑A. Following the shortened 2020 season, he returned to Double‑A before earning a Triple‑A assignment in 2022. An injury cut that season short, but he remained a consistent presence in the upper minors.

Shewmake has seen two brief opportunities in the majors, though he struggled to find his footing, slashing .118/.127/.191 across 31 MLB games, most of them coming with the Chicago White Sox in 2024. Since then, he has spent time back in Triple‑A awaiting another chance.

Now, that opportunity may come in Houston. The Astros have been searching for stability and depth, and if Shewmake can show signs of the offensive promise he displayed at Texas A&M, he could work his way back into a big‑league role.
