Texas A&M Aggies basketball is turning heads this offseason, earning the No. 32 spot in Andy Katz's preseason Power 44 rankings. After a surprising NCAA Tournament run that saw them reach the Round of 32 before falling to powerhouse Houston, head coach Bucky McMillan has the program on the rise.
McMillan, who was the last Power 4 coach hired in April 2024, faced the monumental task of building a roster from scratch through the transfer portal. That challenge paid off last season, and this year, he's reloading with seven new portal additions. The crown jewel is former Kansas State guard PJ Haggerty, who lit up the scoreboard with nearly 24 points per game last season—exactly the kind of go-to scorer the Aggies need after losing senior forward Rashaun Agee, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding.
The returning core looks strong too. Forwards Zach Clemence, Jamie Vinson, and Mackenzie Mgbako are all poised to compete for starting roles alongside Haggerty and former NBA G-League guard Bryson Warren. Off the bench, former LSU guard Jalen Reece brings energy and could be the spark plug that keeps the Aggies rolling.
Perhaps the biggest upgrade? Size. After struggling in the paint last season, Texas A&M landed LMU transfer forward Jalen Shelley, who slides right in as a starting wing and adds reliable scoring near the rim. McMillan may still add one more forward to round out the roster before summer, but the Aggies are already looking formidable.
With the NCAA Tournament set to expand to 76 teams, predicting the future is tricky, but this revamped squad has all the tools to thrive in McMillan's fast-paced, high-scoring system. If you're looking to rep the Aggies as they climb the rankings, now's the time to gear up.
