Former Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic agrees to become the new Athletic Club coach on a two-year contract.

In a move that signals a bold new chapter for Athletic Club, former Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic has agreed to take the reins at the Basque club, signing a two-year deal. The 43-year-old German tactician is set to be officially unveiled at the start of next season, bringing a wealth of high-stakes experience to San Mamés.

Terzic steps in to replace Ernesto Valverde, who announced in March that he would be leaving the club this summer after four seasons at the helm. While speculation had swirled around a potential return for Andoni Iraola—who is departing Bournemouth—Athletic Club has instead opted for a manager with recent Champions League pedigree.

Terzic's tenure at Dortmund was nothing short of dramatic. He lifted the German Cup in 2021, came agonizingly close to snatching the Bundesliga title from Bayern Munich in 2023, and guided the Black and Yellows all the way to the Champions League final in 2024, where they fell 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley. Shortly after that defeat, Terzic requested to leave the club, leaving him available for a fresh challenge.

Before his head coaching stardom, Terzic honed his craft as an assistant to Slaven Bilic at both Turkish side Beşiktaş and Premier League outfit West Ham United. Now, he takes over an Athletic Club side currently sitting eighth in La Liga with just four matches remaining in the season. With his track record of building competitive, resilient teams, Terzic's arrival could be the spark that propels the Lions back toward European contention.
