The Cincinnati Reds were defeated 8-3 by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon. While it was a disappointing game for the Reds, it was not all bad news for the ball club. Outfielder JJ Bleday made his debut with Cincinnati and certainly made an impact.

Bleday hit a solo home run in the fourth inning on a 2-2 pitch to tie the game at 2-2. He ended up going 1-1 in the game with a walk.
After the contest, Reds manager Terry Francona commented on Bleday's performance, via Chatterbox Sports.
"Good, that was real good... We feel like he can help us," Francona said of Bleday. "We just didn't want him to have that last bench spot to start the year because we wanted him to play."
Bleday, 28, signed with the Reds this past offseason. He competed for a roster spot during spring training but ended up beginning the season at Triple-A. As mentioned, Francona and Cincinnati wanted him to have every day at-bats as opposed to only playing occasionally at the MLB level. Reds star Eugenio Suarez was recently placed on the injured list, so Bleday could receive a respectable amount of playing time over the next couple of weeks.
In 24 games at the Triple-A level this season, Bleday has slashed .341/.462/.659 across 85 at-bats. He hit six home runs as well. Bleday was clearly ready for the MLB level.
He has big league experience. Bleday made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Miami Marlins. He also played with the Athletics from 2023-2025. Overall, including Sunday's contest, Bleday has appeared in 405 total big league games and is hitting .216 with a .705 OPS during that span.
He is a left-handed hitter who could make a significant impact against right-handed pitching. It will be interesting to see how much playing time Bleday receives with the Reds. If he continues swinging the bat like he did on Sunday, Francona will have to play him on a consistent basis moving forward.
The Reds were ultimately defeated as mentioned. Cincinnati is still in first place in the National League Central division with an 18-10 overall record. They are hoping to bounce back as soon as possible, however.
Cincinnati's next series will be played against the Colorado Rockies at home. The team has an off day on Monday before the series begins on Tuesday night at 6:40 PM EST in Cincinnati. It is a three-game series that will be played from Tuesday to Thursday.
