The Tennessee rowing program has etched its name into the history books, capturing its first-ever SEC championship in a dramatic showdown on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge.

The championship came down to the wire, with the Lady Vols' varsity eight boat holding off a fierce late charge from Texas in the final 250 meters. The Longhorns pushed hard to overtake Tennessee, but the 1V8 crew held their composure and crossed the line first, securing the team title on May 10.

Tennessee edged Texas by the narrowest of margins, 79-75, to claim the crown. It marks the program's first conference championship since 2013, when the Lady Vols competed in Conference USA. Now, in just their third season under head coach Kim Cupini, Tennessee has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.

"Phenomenal to see that from the team," Cupini said in a school release. "Texas came in as the number one team in the country with an undefeated eight. To see the varsity eight clinch like that was awesome. I have to take my hat off to the full team for getting enough points to win the SEC Championship and bring that trophy home, especially here in Tennessee. I was super impressed and super proud of them."

The Lady Vols racked up four total wins on the day, including victories in the 2V4, 3V8, and 3V4 races. The 1V8 boat posted a winning time of 6:06.939, capping a season in which they've already beaten eight ranked opponents.

One of the most thrilling moments came from the 2V4 crew, which mounted a stunning comeback. Falling behind early, the second varsity four boat rallied in the final 500 meters to overtake Texas and finish with a time of 7:12.677.

"I think the boats on the water saw that," Cupini added. "To race from behind and win is incredible. The second four—we were going crazy on that. That lineup just came together the other day. To see them pull that off and get the win was incredible."

With the SEC title secured, Tennessee now sets its sights on the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 29-31 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Georgia. The Lady Vols are riding a wave of momentum, and this historic victory proves they're ready to compete on the biggest stage.
