In a breathtaking display of grit and determination, Tennessee rowing captured its first-ever SEC championship on May 10 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, edging out powerhouse Texas with a nail-biting 79-75 victory. The title came down to the final race—the varsity eight—where the Lady Vols held off a fierce late surge from the Longhorns in the last 250 meters to secure the win.
This historic triumph marks Tennessee's first conference championship since 2013, when the program competed in Conference USA. Under the guidance of head coach Kim Cupini, now in her third season, the Lady Vols have transformed into a national contender. "Phenomenal to see that from the team," Cupini said. "Texas came in as the number one team in the country with an undefeated eight. To see the varsity eight clinch like that was awesome."
The victory was a total team effort, with Tennessee winning four races overall, including the 2V4, 3V8, and 3V4. The first varsity eight boat clocked in at 6:06.939, marking their eighth win against a ranked opponent this season. The second varsity four crew delivered a comeback for the ages, trailing early before overtaking Texas in the final 500 meters to finish at 7:12.677. "That lineup just got together the other day, so to see them pull that off was incredible," Cupini added.
Tennessee swept the third varsity races, with the 3V8 finishing at 6:29.409 and the 3V4 at 7:16.747. The Lady Vols also placed second in the 2V8 and 1V4, falling to Texas by a combined 11 seconds. Now, with momentum on their side, Tennessee heads to the NCAA Championships at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Georgia, from May 29-31—ready to make waves on the national stage.
