Tennessee is in the final stretch of roster construction, and the Volunteers are zeroing in on a familiar face to shore up the frontcourt. According to reports, the Vols recently hosted Christian Fermin, a 6-foot-10 rim protector from VCU, for an on-campus visit. That connection runs deeper than just height and wingspan—Fermin was a teammate of current Tennessee portal commit Terrence Hill Jr. during their time together with the Rams.
Head coach Rick Barnes has already assembled a potent offensive class through the transfer portal, but the puzzle isn't quite complete. With one roster spot left, the focus has shifted to finding a defensive anchor in the paint. That need became more urgent after Tennessee missed out on 7-foot-1 center Favour Ibe, who committed to Virginia despite visiting Knoxville. As quality big men continue to come off the board—including 7-footer Austin Maurer, who chose Stanford—the Vols are pivoting toward a developmental piece with upside.
Enter Fermin. The Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania native appeared in just four games this past season after taking a leave of absence, but his career numbers tell the story of a shot-blocking presence: 4.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game on 55.3% shooting. At 225 pounds, he brings a sturdy frame and a defensive mindset that fits Barnes' preference for a "defense-first" big man.
While Fermin may not be a household name, his familiarity with Hill Jr. could accelerate the chemistry-building process. For a team that has reloaded with scoring guards and wings, adding a rim-running, shot-swatting center might be the final piece that turns a promising roster into a legitimate contender. Tennessee fans should keep a close eye on this visit—it could be the move that seals the deal for the Vols' offseason.
