The Tennessee Volunteers are now in pursuit for another center after losing their priority target. Now, Tennessee is going after the top available at the position.

The Tennessee Volunteers men's basketball program has been nearly flawless in the transfer portal this spring, assembling one of the top classes in the country. But even with that success, head coach Rick Barnes and his staff still have one crucial roster spot to fill—and they're now turning their attention to a seven-foot center after missing out on their top target.

The Vols had been waiting on a decision from 7-foot-1 recruit Favour Ibe, who visited Knoxville over the weekend. As VolQuest's Brent Hubbs noted on WNML's SportsTalk, the team was essentially in a holding pattern until Ibe made his call. "I think right now you're waiting to see what the visitor from over the weekend does," Hubbs said. "What does he do? That sort feels like where it is right now. And then after that, I don't know."

Unfortunately for Tennessee, that wait ended with Ibe committing to Virginia. The four-star big man, ranked No. 82 overall in the 2026 class by Rivals, chose the Cavaliers after also visiting Alabama and Villanova. It was one of the few notable misses for the Vols during an otherwise stellar offseason, but Barnes and his staff wasted no time in pivoting.

Now, Tennessee is going all-in for Austin Maurer, a 7-foot, 235-pound transfer from Seattle. According to A To Z Sports' Zach Ragan, Maurer is ranked by 247Sports as the top available center in the transfer portal—exactly the kind of rim protector the Vols need to shore up their frontcourt depth.

Barnes already has trusted options to handle the bulk of minutes at center, but adding another seven-footer would provide crucial insurance and long-term development potential. Maurer, a Medford, Oregon native, is viewed as a young prospect who could thrive in Barnes' system, especially if he's willing to embrace a developmental role and focus on growth over immediate playing time.

For a Tennessee program that has been so close to perfection this spring, landing Maurer would be the final piece of the puzzle—and a statement that the Vols aren't done building yet.
