A potential answer down low.

Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers are on the hunt for some serious frontcourt firepower, and they just brought in a big name to explore that option. On Wednesday, the Vols hosted former VCU standout Christian Fermin for a campus visit in Knoxville, signaling a clear focus on shoring up their interior depth.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-10, Fermin is no stranger to making an impact in the paint. He posted highlights from his visit on Instagram, and here's the kicker—he's already got a familiar face in the Tennessee locker room. Fermin was teammates with new Vols guard Terrence Hill Jr. during their time together at VCU, which could make for a seamless transition if he decides to suit up in orange.

Now, Fermin's 2024-25 season was limited to just four games due to a personal matter, but don't let that fool you. Over the previous three seasons, he was a rim-protecting machine for the Rams, appearing in 86 games and swatting away a total of 111 shots. In his last full campaign, he averaged 4.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game—solid numbers for a player who thrives as a defensive anchor. Originally a 3-star recruit from Pennsylvania, Fermin has the size and shot-altering ability that could make him a perfect fit for Barnes' system.

This visit comes on the heels of Tennessee hosting 7-foot-1 prep center Favour Ibe last week, though Ibe ultimately committed to Virginia after his visit. The Vols already have a stable of true post players in DeWayne Brown, Miles Rubin, and Braeden Lue, with Jalen Harrelson and Chris Washington Jr. potentially chipping in at the four spot. But with at least one scholarship still open, Barnes is clearly looking to add a little insurance down low—and Fermin could be just the answer.
