The Tennessee Volunteers' backcourt is set for a shakeup as freshman guard Amari Evans has announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal. The news, first reported by Joe Tipton of On3, marks the departure of a promising young talent from Rick Barnes's program after just one season.

Evans, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound guard from Pittsburgh, arrived in Knoxville with considerable potential after a standout prep career with Overtime Elite in Atlanta. He was a key piece of the Vols' 2025 signing class, ranked by 247Sports as the No. 11 small forward and the No. 4 overall player in the state of Georgia.

In his debut collegiate season, Evans showed flashes of his ability, averaging 4.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while carving out a role off the bench. His decision to explore new opportunities comes during a period of significant transition for the Volunteers' roster.

Tennessee is preparing to replace three graduating seniors: point guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie, shooting guard Amaree Abram, and center Felix Okpara. To address these losses, the coaching staff has been active in both the high school recruiting trail and the transfer portal. The Vols have secured three commitments for their 2026 freshman class and recently added a key piece in Belmont transfer shooting guard Tyler Lundblade.

Evans's entry into the portal underscores the ever-evolving nature of college basketball rosters, where player movement has become a central part of team building each offseason. As the Vols look to maintain their competitive edge in the SEC, managing this roster turnover will be crucial for their success in the coming season.
