Tennessee basketball fans have a marquee matchup to look forward to in the 2026-27 season. Head coach Rick Barnes made the exciting announcement during the Big Orange Caravan in Nashville on April 29: the Vols will host Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans at Food City Center in Knoxville.

This showdown brings together two programs with a storied history, though they haven't faced off since a heart-stopping Elite Eight clash in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. In that game, Michigan State edged out Bruce Pearl's Tennessee squad with a nail-biting 70-69 victory. The Vols currently hold a 2-5 record against the Spartans overall, and a 1-2 mark when playing in Knoxville.

The matchup adds to what's shaping up to be a challenging non-conference slate. Tennessee already has a tough road game scheduled at Purdue on Dec. 12 as part of a home-and-home series, giving fans plenty of big-game excitement to anticipate.

Beyond the schedule news, Barnes also shared his thoughts on the upcoming NCAA Tournament expansion. Starting next season, both the men's and women's tournaments will grow from 64 to 76 teams. While Barnes acknowledged the change, he expressed some reservations. "I haven't thought anything about it," he said. "I just think it's got to happen in three weeks. I think you've got a three-week window there where we can capture the country. I think it's the greatest sporting event... but I always thought too that, you can't do away with the small-level schools, so this does still give everybody a chance to be a part of it."

Barnes also questioned whether teams from the expanded field could realistically make a championship run. "My whole thing is, I don't think you can ask a national championship team to play more than six games," he added. "I think it's hard for any of us to go through that. But if a team can get through that, they deserve to be the national champion."

For Vols fans eager to gear up for this highly anticipated clash, now is the perfect time to stock up on Tennessee basketball apparel. Whether you're cheering from the stands at Food City Center or watching from home, make sure you're repping the orange and white when the Spartans come to town.
