The Tennessee Volunteers are in desperate need of another big man. However, the one they were wanting to fill the roster just committed to Virginia after a visit.

Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers came up short in a key recruiting battle, losing out on priority big man Favour Ibe to Virginia—a tough blow for a roster still searching for answers in the paint.

The 7-foot-1 four-star center, ranked No. 82 overall in the 2026 class by Rivals, visited Knoxville over the weekend before heading to Charlottesville. Virginia ultimately sealed the deal, leaving Tennessee's frontcourt depth in a precarious spot as the spring recruiting cycle winds down.

Ibe's combination of size and rim-protection potential made him an ideal fit for a Tennessee team that's been hunting for reliable interior presence. The Vols' staff invested significant time and energy into his recruitment, even pausing other pursuits while awaiting his decision. "I think right now you're waiting to see what the visitor from over the weekend does," VolQuest's Brent Hubbs said on WNML's SportsTalk. "That sort feels like where it is right now. And then after that, I don't know."

Losing Ibe to an SEC rival—Virginia, no less—stings even more. The Cavaliers have built a reputation for developing big men, and they'll get a chance to mold Ibe's raw talent over the next few years. For Tennessee, the whiff leaves a glaring hole at center with just a couple of roster spots remaining.

The Vols still have options on the transfer market and in the 2026 class, but this was a player they targeted heavily. Barnes and his staff will need to pivot quickly to fill that void—because in the rugged SEC, you can't win without size, strength, and someone to patrol the middle. For now, Tennessee's center search continues.
