The Tennessee Volunteers men's basketball program has been making waves this spring, assembling one of the most impressive transfer portal classes in the entire country. Head coach Rick Barnes and his staff have been busy securing top-tier talent, but as the roster fills up, one final spot remains—and the options are getting thin.
Tennessee's portal success has been remarkable, with only one notable miss during the entire cycle: the recruitment of 7-foot high school prospect Favour Ibe. The four-star center, standing at 7-foot-1, was ranked No. 82 overall in the 2026 class by Rivals. After visiting Tennessee, Alabama, and Villanova, Ibe ultimately committed to Virginia, leaving the Vols to pivot quickly to other targets.
With Ibe off the board, Tennessee turned its attention to another big man: Seattle transfer Austin Maurer. The 7-foot, 235-pound center from Medford, Oregon, was ranked by 247Sports as the top available center in the portal. Maurer would have been a strong final addition for the Vols, especially given their need for a rim protector. However, in a tough break for Barnes, Maurer chose to commit to Stanford University instead.
That decision has left Tennessee in a tight spot. With the market for experienced big men shrinking fast, Barnes is now facing a dwindling pool of "quality options." As A To Z Sports' Zach Ragan noted, "Given the amount of scoring that Tennessee has added via the portal, it's safe to assume that Barnes will be looking for a defense-first type of big man. But with Maurer off the board, quality options are dwindling."
The Vols have already added significant firepower through the portal, but filling that final roster spot with a reliable center will be crucial for balancing the lineup. For now, Barnes and his staff will need to dig deep to find a hidden gem—or risk heading into the season with an incomplete frontcourt.
