Reds pitcher Tejay Antone's first MLB appearance since April 2024, after his third Tommy John surgery, featured two strikeouts in a scoreless inning.

In a moment that felt like a scene from a sports movie, Cincinnati Reds reliever Tejay Antone made his long-awaited return to the mound on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. It was his first MLB appearance since April 2024, a comeback made all the more remarkable by the fact that he had undergone his third Tommy John surgery. And in just one inning, he reminded everyone why perseverance is the heart of baseball.

Antone took the mound in the eighth inning and delivered a scoreless frame that was pure electricity. He struck out Alex Bregman looking, got a flyout from Ian Happ thanks to a jaw-dropping catch by center fielder TJ Friedl, and then punched out Seiya Suzuki swinging. As he walked off the field, Antone let out a roar that echoed through the dugout—and that emotion proved contagious.

Reds.TV announcers John Sadak and analyst Jeff Brantley couldn't hide their admiration. "Let's be honest," Brantley said during the broadcast. "The emotion the Reds got from seeing Antone back on the mound, coming off screaming into the dugout—that's the emotion we saw this club play with early in the season. They've got to figure out a way to find it every single night."

And find it they did. In the top of the ninth, the Reds rallied for four runs, sparked by that very energy. Elly De La Cruz delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored two runs—a rare feat that had Brantley exclaiming, "You don't see a sac fly with two RBIs very often!" The play gave Cincinnati a brief 6-4 lead, though the Cubs would eventually edge them out 7-6 in 10 innings.

Brantley also praised Friedl's catch, saying, "I think Friedl was gonna run through that wall to get to that baseball. He never broke stride, never stopped, not even for a second. That's a great play."

For Antone, the journey back has been nothing short of monumental. "The emotions that must be going through Tejay Antone," Sadak reflected. Brantley added, "I can't even imagine. You work so hard for so long, and have so much disappointment. And now here I am again, on the mound. His teammates know the physical, emotional, mental struggles just to get back on the mound. They know."

In a game defined by grit and heart, Antone's inning was the spark that reminded everyone why we love this sport—and why every comeback story is worth celebrating.
