Somerset County Cricket Club has secured a major piece of their future, with teenage wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club through the 2028 season.

At just 18 years old, Rew has already made waves in the cricketing world. After signing his first professional deal in July 2023—which was initially set to run until October 2027—the young star has quickly proven his worth. He made his senior debut in the T20 Blast and hasn't looked back since.

Rew is part of an exciting family duo at Somerset. His older brother James, 21, has already established himself in the first XI, and together they're considered two of England's brightest young prospects. Thomas recently captained England's Under-19s to a World Cup final in February and even toured Australia with the England Lions—experiences that have accelerated his development.

"Opportunities such as those with the England U19s and the England Lions have arrived pretty fast for me in the last 12 months," Rew said in a statement. "Events have happened in my cricketing journey so far that I wasn't necessarily expecting. I'm grateful to Somerset for all the opportunities they have given me. I just try to take one match at a time and not look too far ahead—an approach which really helped me last year."

Rew's journey with Somerset began at the under-11 level, and he has since progressed to make 13 senior appearances. These include two T20 Blast matches, 10 One-Day Cup games, and his County Championship debut in Somerset's recent defeat against Yorkshire.

Head coach Jason Kerr emphasized the importance of patience with the young talent. "It's easy to forget how young Thomas is," Kerr said. "He has an innate ability to be incredibly competitive and read situations effectively. There's a maturity in his cricket that not everybody has, and that's combined with ability and talent. It's going to be really exciting to see how he develops."

For cricket fans and Somerset supporters, this extension signals the club's commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and building a foundation for sustained success.
