In a stunning display of raw speed and composure, Mercedes' teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli has done it again—securing pole position for the Miami Grand Prix in a heart-pounding qualifying session that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The 19-year-old Italian, already the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history, fended off a fierce late challenge from four-time world champion Max Verstappen to claim the top spot. Antonelli's blistering lap of 1:27.798 was just enough to edge out Verstappen's Red Bull, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc rounding out the top three.
Earlier in the day, Lando Norris had dominated the sprint race in his McLaren, but the world champion will have to settle for fourth on the grid come Sunday. It's a testament to the depth of talent in this season's field that even a sprint race winner can be pushed down the order.
What makes Antonelli's achievement truly remarkable is that this marks his third consecutive pole position—a feat that puts him in the elite company of legends like Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. For a driver so young, to be mentioned alongside those icons is nothing short of extraordinary.
Behind the leaders, Mercedes' George Russell took fifth, while seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth in his Ferrari. Oscar Piastri was seventh in the second McLaren, followed by Alpine's Franco Colapinto, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, and Pierre Gasly in the second Alpine.
"It has been an amazing day for me to be on pole again," said an elated Antonelli. "The sprint race earlier was tough, but I'm so happy with this recovery. I got a little too excited on my final lap in Q3, but my first lap was good enough. I was so stressed waiting for everyone to finish, but it worked out. Now, hopefully, I'll have a magic start tomorrow."
With the sun setting on Miami and the grid set for Sunday's main event, all eyes will be on the young Italian to see if he can convert this pole into a victory—and perhaps take another step toward cementing his place among the sport's greats.
