In a story that feels straight out of a Hollywood script—fittingly so—Ted Lasso star Cristo Fernandez has traded the pitch for the real deal, signing with USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive after a two-month trial.

The 35-year-old Mexican actor, best known for his infectious optimism as Dani Rojas on the award-winning Apple TV+ series, is now trading lines for tackles in El Paso. Fernandez, who played youth football in his hometown of Guadalajara, stepped away from the sport at 15 due to a knee injury, but never let the dream die.

"Football has always been a huge part of my life and identity," Fernandez said. "No matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart."

After moving to London and landing his breakout role in Ted Lasso—which ran for three celebrated seasons—Fernandez kept his soccer ambitions alive. Earlier this year, he trialed with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire's second team before finding his home with the Locomotive.

"I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC – the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates – for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one," he added. "This journey back to professional soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be. Maybe I'm just a crazy man with crazy dreams... so being here with the 'Locos' actually makes perfect sense."

Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez is equally excited about the addition. "Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line," Gonzalez said.

For fans of both the beautiful game and the beloved show, Fernandez's signing is a reminder that sometimes, the most inspiring plays happen off the screen—and on the pitch. Whether you're gearing up for your own comeback or just love a good underdog story, it's never too late to chase your dreams.
