In a story that feels straight out of a Hollywood script, Ted Lasso star Cristo Fernandez has traded the pitch for the real thing, signing with USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive after a two-month trial. The 35-year-old Mexican actor, best known for his infectious portrayal of Dani Rojas in the award-winning Apple TV+ series, is swapping fictional football for the real deal in Texas.
Fernandez, who played youth football in his hometown of Guadalajara before a knee injury sidelined his dreams at age 15, never lost his love for the beautiful game. After his breakout role in the hit show—which ran from 2020 to 2023 and earned multiple accolades—he decided to chase a second act on the field. Earlier this year, he even trialed with the Chicago Fire's second team in Major League Soccer, showing his commitment to the comeback.
"Football has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernandez shared, echoing the optimism that made his TV character so beloved. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC – the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates – for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."
His journey to the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer, is a testament to perseverance. "This journey back to professional soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be," he added.
