From the pitch to the screen and back again—Cristo Fernandez, best known as the ever-optimistic Dani Rojas on Ted Lasso, is trading scripted goals for real ones. The 35-year-old actor has officially signed a professional contract with El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL Championship, turning fiction into reality in a move that feels straight out of a sports movie.
Announced on Tuesday, the deal is pending league and federation approval, with financial terms kept under wraps. Fernandez earned his spot after a two-month trial with the club, including a pre-season appearance against New Mexico United. For the actor, this marks a full-circle moment: he played youth soccer before a teenage injury sidelined his dreams and nudged him toward acting. Now, he's lacing up for real.
"No matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernandez said. "I’m incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC—the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates—for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."
Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez sees Fernandez as more than a feel-good story. "He brings an attacking threat, passion, and leadership to the dressing room," Gonzalez noted, highlighting the actor's soccer IQ and infectious energy—qualities that made Dani Rojas a fan favorite.
Fernandez's journey from the set to the soccer field is a testament to perseverance. Since Ted Lasso debuted in 2020, he's appeared in all three seasons, with a fourth on the way later this year. Off the pitch, he's also shared screen time with NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes in a 2024 State Farm commercial and had a cameo in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 alongside Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves.
Now, in his mid-thirties, Fernandez is chasing a different kind of goal—one that proves it's never too late to follow your passion. As he suits up for El Paso, fans of both soccer and television will be watching to see if this real-life underdog story has a winning ending.
