The Tech3 MotoGP team is edging closer to a pivotal decision that could reshape the grid for the 2027 season: stick with long-time partner KTM or switch to Honda for the dawn of the 850cc era.
While the 2027 silly season is still in its early stages—with most announcements on hold until new commercial agreements with MotoGP's rights holder, Dorna Sports, are finalized—the paddock is buzzing with behind-the-scenes negotiations. At the end of March, reports emerged that Honda is actively looking to expand its satellite presence, with Tech3 as its top target.
Leading the charge for Tech3 is none other than Guenther Steiner, the former Haas Formula 1 team principal who took over the French squad last year and now serves as its CEO. Steiner is known for his sharp business instincts, and he's reportedly in direct talks with Honda to explore the possibilities.
In an exclusive interview with Motorsport France, Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon offered a rare glimpse into the team's thinking. "Behind the scenes, every manufacturer has been conducting negotiations with its independent team," Goyon explained. "For teams like VR46, nothing has been officially announced, but everything is already clear on their side: they will continue with Ducati. If you pay attention, I think every team has clarified the situation. The only team still in talks is us."
Goyon confirmed that Steiner is actively engaging with Honda, which is reportedly looking to add a third satellite squad to its roster. "Guenther is coming in, having discussions, assessing the market as it stands, and exploring the various possibilities," Goyon said. "The only option that seems to be on the table apart from KTM is Honda."
Despite the intrigue, Tech3 isn't rushing into anything. "We have a good agreement with KTM, but he's also weighing things up," Goyon added. "He doesn't want to make any knee-jerk decisions. He's studying the market to see what the options are. And then he'll make his choice."
For now, the decision remains open, but with the 2027 regulation overhaul on the horizon—and a potential new partnership with Honda in play—Tech3's next move could be one of the most consequential of the off-season. Stay tuned.
