When you step onto the varsity soccer field as a freshman, the pressure is real. For Lincoln-Way West's Grace Kinsella, that challenge came with a built-in advantage: her sister, Kate, a senior captain and committed to Wisconsin-Platteville, was right there beside her. "I love it," Grace says. "It’s great having someone on the team who knows me so well and can help me out."
That sibling chemistry is paying off in a big way. Grace has erupted for 18 goals this season, including a two-goal performance that led the Warriors to a commanding 4-1 SouthWest Suburban Conference victory over Lockport. Olivia Stewart also netted a pair, while Lucy Sheriff dished out two assists. Jaiden Hughes added an assist, and goalkeeper Cora Franczyk made six saves to keep the Warriors (13-3-1, 4-2) in control. For Lockport (9-6-1, 1-3), Bowling Green recruit Yuridia Hernandez scored the lone goal.
Grace set the tone early, finishing a cross from Sheriff in the 11th minute. "It definitely gave us confidence for the rest of the game," she notes. She struck again before halftime, capping a breakout stretch she admits caught her off guard. "Honestly, I didn’t expect to do this much this season," she says.
But Kate always knew. "Oh, I 100% expected this," Kate says. "Grace has always been on the top club teams, and she always plays super hard and plays really connected to her teammates." She’s been hyping her sister up to coach Joe Stephens for years. "Kate’s been saying for years, 'Grace is a great player, coach. I promise you,'" Stephens recalls. "So, actually seeing them play together has been awesome."
Grace’s stat line is impressive: 18 goals and nine assists. Kate, meanwhile, has chipped in five goals and four assists while anchoring the midfield. "Kate is our engine in the middle of the field," Stephens says. Together, the Kinsella sisters are proving that family ties can turn a freshman into a goal-scoring star—and make the game that much sweeter.
