The No. 20-ranked Michigan State men's tennis team is authoring a storybook season, emerging as the undeniable Team of the Week. After navigating a challenging 3-7 start in non-conference play, the Spartans have become an unstoppable force in the Big Ten, boasting a perfect conference record. They now stand just three victories away from capturing their first Big Ten regular-season championship in over half a century, a feat not accomplished since 1967.
This remarkable turnaround began with adversity, as the team battled significant injuries at the start of the spring season. However, when conference play arrived, the Spartans flipped a switch. Head coach Harry Jadun credits the shift to unwavering belief and sheer determination. "It was really just the guys sticking to what they believe in... and kind of flip this thing around through pure grit and toughness," Jadun said.
The defining moment of their campaign came on March 15th in Columbus, where they achieved the unthinkable: a victory over the No. 1-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. This wasn't just any win; it snapped a 25-year losing streak against OSU and marked the Buckeyes' first home conference loss since 2003. For a program building a legacy, it was a monumental statement victory.
Coach Jadun revealed that the team had been building toward this breakthrough, having come agonizingly close last season. "We had them on the ropes last year... When we got in a position to close that match, the guys knew what was necessary. They didn't get too high or too low, they just stayed the course," he explained.
That mentality of "staying the course" has been the bedrock of their success. Senior star Ozan Baris, a key piece of the Spartan lineup who also overcame early injuries, emphasized the importance of composure. "We always knew what we were capable of... it was more so just getting healthy and being able to show that on the match court," Baris stated. He called the historic win in Columbus a "big pivot in the season," providing an immense confidence boost.
The team's philosophy is encapsulated in a powerful metaphor from Coach Jadun, one that resonated deeply with Baris and his teammates. "One of the things Harry was saying was, we've got a picture and we're just waiting for this picture to unfold," Baris shared. "We just gotta keep waiting. [If] you've ever seen one of those pictures where they're painting upside down and you have no clue what they're painting..." For the Spartans, the masterpiece is now coming into clear, brilliant view, one undefeated match at a time.
