Wales head coach Steve Tandy is taking his time to decide who will lead the team this summer, keeping fans and players alike in suspense as the international season approaches.

After naming a 48-man squad for four upcoming matches in June and July, Tandy has deliberately left the captaincy position open. The decision comes at a pivotal moment for Welsh rugby, with several strong candidates emerging from a period of injury and recovery.

Flanker Jac Morgan, who captained Wales in Tandy's first match in charge against Argentina back in November 2025, has been sidelined with a shoulder injury that kept him out of the next eight fixtures. In his absence, hooker Dewi Lake stepped up admirably, leading the side through the remainder of the 2025 autumn internationals and the entire 2026 Six Nations campaign.

Now, with Morgan back to full fitness and Lake expected to recover from his own shoulder issue in time for the uncapped clash against the Barbarians on June 27—or the three Nations Championship matches against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa in July—Tandy faces a welcome selection headache.

Interestingly, this isn't uncharted territory for Wales. Former boss Warren Gatland appointed Morgan and Lake as co-captains for the 2023 World Cup, and Tandy hasn't ruled out revisiting that approach. "It is about having a good think now the squad has been announced," Tandy explained. "Jac's up and running, and I also thought the way Dewi went about his business in the Six Nations was outstanding."

But the leadership conversation doesn't stop there. Tandy also highlighted Dafydd Jenkins, Tomos Williams, and Josh Adams as influential figures who have been leading throughout. "It's how we managed the leadership situation properly, having chats with the boys about how we manufacture that going forward," he added.

Despite his five-month absence, British and Irish Lions star Morgan has returned in impressive form since late March. "He's a world-class player and world-class bloke," Tandy said. "You see what it means to him playing rugby. He's always been around the group, even in the Six Nations popping his head in. It's brilliant for him to be back playing and awesome for us as a nation that we're bringing someone of world-class quality back in."

Adding to the back-row depth, Morgan has been joined by the recalled Tommy Reffell, who was left out of Tandy's first two squads. With six uncapped players also earning call-ups, Wales is blending experience with fresh talent as they gear up for a demanding summer schedule.

Whether Tandy goes with a single captain or a shared leadership model, one thing is clear: Welsh rugby is in good hands, with depth and quality that bodes well for the matches ahead.
