When you're a top seed in the NCAA Softball Tournament, the goal is simple: take care of business at home. For the Florida State Seminoles, that path just got a little clearer. As the No. 9 overall seed, FSU is hosting the Tallahassee Regional for the 12th consecutive season, and according to Softball America, they've landed one of the more favorable brackets in the field.
Ranking all 16 regionals by difficulty, analyst Brady Vernon placed Tallahassee as the 6th easiest draw. "The Florida State team that played at Stanford shows up," Vernon noted, acknowledging the Seminoles' potential while suggesting they should be "just fine" in a regional that, on paper, lacks a true weak link.
FSU opens the double-elimination tournament on Friday against No. 4-seeded Stetson at JoAnne Graf Field. They'll be joined by No. 2 UCF and No. 3 Jacksonville State in a battle for a spot in the Super Regionals. The Seminoles boast a dominant 49-8 record this season, having swept both the ACC regular season and tournament titles. While they haven't faced any of these teams in 2024, history is on their side: FSU holds an all-time record of 17-1 against Stetson, 6-2 against Jacksonville State, and 26-5 against UCF.
The Knights (38-16-1) are making their sixth straight NCAA appearance and have become familiar faces in Tallahassee, competing in this regional three of the last four seasons. Jacksonville State (45-14) earned an automatic bid by winning the Conference USA Championship and is making its third consecutive trip to the Tallahassee Regional. Stetson (36-20) punched their ticket by winning the ASUN title and enters on a three-game winning streak.
While the regional might look manageable on paper, Vernon warns that "Stetson gave Florida quite a battle" and "Jax State hung around with Alabama." UCF also owns impressive wins over LSU, Oklahoma State, and Arizona State. "There's a chance the Knights get hot at the plate and Isabella Vega goes on a tear," he added, "but even in a regional without a weak point, it still feels like the Seminoles should be just fine."
For FSU fans, this is the kind of bracket that sets up a deep postseason run—if the Seminoles can bring their A-game. With three teams inside the top 70 of the RPI, there's no room for complacency, but the path to the Super Regionals is wide open.
