Takuma Sato gets the same impression from his Indy 500 teammate Mick Schumacher that he used to get from Michael Schumacher while they were rival Formula 1 drivers. Sato is one of the most legendary names in the modern history of the Indianapolis 500, after the Japanese hero won the race in 2017 for Andretti and 2020 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

When two-time Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato looks at his new teammate Mick Schumacher, he doesn’t just see a promising rookie—he sees a familiar legend staring back.

Sato, a modern icon of the Indianapolis 500 after winning the legendary race in 2017 with Andretti and again in 2020 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, is gearing up for a one-off appearance at the 2026 Indy 500 on May 24. And he’ll be sharing the garage with a driver whose last name carries immense weight in motorsport.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing handed Mick Schumacher his IndyCar debut earlier this season, and now the son of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher is preparing for his first crack at the Brickyard. After spending two years in the World Endurance Championship following his departure from Haas F1, Mick has taken on the challenge of open-wheel racing in America.

It hasn’t been an easy transition. Through six rounds of the 2026 IndyCar season, the 27-year-old sits 25th in the standings with 54 points, his best finish being a 17th-place result at the Grand Prix of Long Beach in April. But Sato sees something special brewing beneath the surface.

The two drivers first crossed paths at the Indy 500 open test in late April, and Sato came away with a powerful impression. Having raced against Michael Schumacher during his own F1 career from 2002 to 2008, the Japanese driver knows greatness when he sees it.

“I can strongly sense his father’s DNA in him,” Sato shared in quotes reported by Motorsport.com. “I was fortunate enough to have the wonderful experience of competing alongside Michael Schumacher. But when I met and talked to Mick, the way he spoke gave me the impression of a person of great character, just like his father.”

Sato is careful to acknowledge that Mick wants to carve his own path, not just live in his father’s shadow. “Of course, Mick wants to be treated as Mick, not Michael’s son, and we respect that. But I’m happy to have met him.”

And the early signs on track are promising. “He’s incredibly fast, even though it’s only been two days since he raced in Indianapolis. We’ve had some good discussions, and I’m happy to be working with him.”

For fans of motorsport—and those who remember the Schumacher dynasty in Formula 1—seeing the next generation take on the world’s most famous race is a story worth watching. And with a legend like Sato as his sounding board, Mick Schumacher’s Indy 500 debut could be the start of something special.
