Syracuse women’s lacrosse: NCAA Tournament First Round vs. Loyola preview and game thread

The Orange and Greyhounds meet again, this time with the season on the line.

The NCAA Tournament is officially here, and the Syracuse Orange women's lacrosse team is hitting the road with everything on the line. Unseeded but undeterred, 'Cuse heads to Annapolis for the opening weekend, ready to prove that rankings mean nothing when the bracket opens.

Their first-round matchup? A familiar foe. The Orange will face off against the Loyola Greyhounds in a rematch of their late-February clash, which Syracuse won decisively at the Dome. Now, with the season hanging in the balance, these two teams meet again—this time with no room for error.

Opening draw from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is set for 7 PM on ESPN+. As the team put it themselves: "Anytime. Anywhere. Anybody. It's Tournament time. We're ready."

Loyola comes into this game with a solid 12-7 record, including a 7-2 mark in Patriot League play. Their non-conference schedule was no walk in the park—they dropped games to powerhouse programs like Johns Hopkins, Florida, and Syracuse, but also notched impressive wins over Ivy League contenders Princeton and Penn. Boston College also handed them a loss when they visited in early April.

In conference, the Greyhounds' biggest tests came against the service academies. They suffered an eight-goal loss to Army in mid-March but bounced back with what might be their best win of the season—a five-goal victory over Navy late in March. That loss remains Navy's only blemish this year. Loyola then fell to Army again, 13-11, in the Patriot League tournament semifinals on April 30—a game also played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, giving the Greyhounds a familiarity edge heading into this rematch.

Here's where things get interesting. Loyola enters this game as the No. 1 draw control team in the country, boasting a dominant .667 win percentage at the circle. That's a massive advantage against a Syracuse squad that ranks 111th nationally in draw control, with just a .399 win percentage. If the Orange can't find a way to neutralize that, the Greyhounds will control the tempo from the opening whistle.

Offensively, Loyola is no slouch either. They rank 29th in scoring (12.89 goals per game), 21st in shot percentage (.455), and 23rd in assists per game (7.26). They're also second in the country in free-position shots taken (119), with a .479 conversion rate. That means Syracuse's defense will need to stay disciplined—avoiding shooting space violations and three-second calls to keep Loyola from getting easy looks from the eight-meter arc.

For the Orange, this is a chance to prove that early-season win was no fluke. But with the Greyhounds' draw control dominance and a venue they know well, Syracuse will need to bring their A-game from the very first whistle. Tournament time is here—and every possession counts.
