Big news for Syracuse basketball fans: the Orange are set to host the UAlbany Great Danes next season in what promises to be an exciting New York State showdown. According to a report from CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, the game will take place at the JMA Wireless Dome as part of Syracuse's 2026-27 non-conference schedule.
This matchup carries some extra intrigue. Last year, Syracuse head coach Gerry McNamara—who previously coached at Siena—led the Orange to victory over UAlbany in the Albany Cup. Now, he's looking to add a Governor's Cup to the mix, sending a not-so-subtle hint to New York State legislators. The Orange have dominated this in-state rivalry historically, holding a perfect 9-0 record against UAlbany. Their most recent meeting came in 2024, when Syracuse rolled to a 102-85 win behind Donnie Freeman's 24-point performance.
The Orange are already building a stacked non-conference slate for next season. In addition to UAlbany, Syracuse is reportedly set to face Providence and Indiana. However, the packed schedule means there's no room for a game against St. Bonaventure—though sources indicate that rivalry could be revived in the near future. As St. Bonaventure's coach put it: "I tried to get Syracuse on the schedule this year. We couldn't. Their schedule was filled. But we're gonna try and (schedule games with Syracuse) because I think that's important."
Fans should also keep an eye out for a potential exhibition game against Siena next fall. While the Orange won't face the Saints during the regular season, an exhibition matchup remains a possibility. For now, though, all eyes are on this in-state clash with UAlbany—a game that's sure to bring plenty of energy to the Dome and give fans a taste of New York basketball pride.
