As the summer transfer window approaches, Swansea City's coaching staff is set to hold crucial talks regarding the future of academy graduate Ollie Cooper, following a challenging campaign for the Wales international midfielder.
Head coach Vitor Matos confirmed that discussions are on the horizon for the 26-year-old, who has endured a difficult season both at the Swansea.com Stadium and during a loan spell away. "Ollie came in a hard situation after his loan, coming back to the club and knowing that there are a lot of players in his position, but his professionalism is outstanding," Matos said. "He trains every day with the same behaviour, with the same passion, and that holds all my respect. Of course we need to speak about his future and we need to see what is the best for him and best for the club."
Cooper, who is under contract until 2027, made just two appearances for Swansea in the 2025-26 season. His campaign began with a brief outing in the EFL Cup win over Crawley Town last August, before then-manager Alan Sheehan sanctioned a season-long loan move to League One side Wigan Athletic. However, the switch proved disappointing, with Cooper featuring only 13 times for the Latics before returning to Swansea in January. Since his return, he has managed just a single substitute appearance under Matos.
It's a stark contrast to the trajectory Cooper was on just a few seasons ago. After graduating from Swansea's academy, he impressed during a loan spell at Newport County in 2021-22, which paved the way for him to establish himself as a key figure under former boss Russell Martin. His performances earned him a Wales debut under Rob Page in March 2023, and he has also featured for current Wales manager Craig Bellamy. However, his international place has slipped away amid his struggles at club level.
In total, Cooper has made 118 appearances for Swansea, scoring nine goals. Yet, he has not started a league game for the club since the defeat at Stoke City in February 2025, which marked the end of Luke Williams' tenure in charge. As the summer window looms, all eyes will be on the club's decision regarding one of their own homegrown talents.
