Swansea City say they are in talks over Joel Ward's future with the veteran defender's contract set to expire next month.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Swansea City are working hard to secure the future of veteran defender Joel Ward, whose current contract is set to expire next month. The 36-year-old, a former Crystal Palace captain, joined the Swans in January on a short-term deal to bolster manager Vitor Matos' options at right-back and central defense. While Ward has made 16 appearances for the Championship side, only three of those have been league starts, but his experience remains valuable as the club navigates the final stretch of the season.

With the deadline for end-of-season retained lists looming, Swansea have confirmed they "remain in discussions" with Ward and young goalkeeper Kit Margetson, who is also out of contract this summer. The club's focus on retaining key players comes as they look to build a solid foundation for the next campaign.

In positive news, Swansea have secured winger Aimar Govea on a new deal that runs until December. The 19-year-old, who made five senior appearances for the Swans in the 2023-24 season, returned early from a loan spell at Girona in January due to injury issues. His new contract signals the club's commitment to nurturing young talent.

However, not all players will be staying. Forward Josh Thomas, who made just one senior appearance for Swansea in August 2024, has been released alongside a host of other youngsters: Evan Anderson, Mitchell Bates, Callum Deacon, Isaac Dudding, Wahab Ojetoro, Ben Phillips, and Brogan Popham. These decisions reflect the club's ongoing squad restructuring.

On a brighter note, academy prospects Caleb Demery, Billy Clarke, Caio Ifans, Callum Jones, Milo Robinson, Jacob Cook, and Thomas Searle have been offered new contracts or had 12-month extension options exercised by the club. This investment in youth development underscores Swansea's long-term vision, with one young player summing it up: "My life has been school and Swansea City and that's it."
