Shane Van Gisbergen turned a 29-second deficit into a 7-second margin of victory in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International.

Shane Van Gisbergen pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent NASCAR Cup Series history, storming back from a 29-second deficit to dominate the closing laps and repeat as champion of the Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. The New Zealand native, celebrating his 37th birthday weekend in style after winning the pole position on Saturday, turned a seemingly insurmountable gap into a 7-second margin of victory by the checkered flag.

After making his final pit stop with 24 laps remaining, SVG—as fans affectionately call him—roared past more than 20 cars over an electrifying 18-lap stretch. The defining moment came on lap 93 of 100 when he executed a daring pass of Ty Gibbs in the infamous Bus Stop section, snatching the lead and never looking back. It marked his seventh career Cup Series victory and his first of the 2026 season, while giving team owner Trackhouse Racing its 15th overall win.

What made this victory even more special was that it came in the No. 97 Chevrolet—the same number his father, Robert Van Gisbergen, raced with in New Zealand. "That's the best feeling you can get when you have a tire advantage and an awesome car," Van Gisbergen said after the race. "I was just carving everyone up. Some people were nice and laying over, which was cool. Then the people that didn't, you had to put good moves on. That's the most fun."

Michael McDowell finished a distant second, 7.29 seconds behind the dominant Kiwi, who continues to prove he's in a league of his own on road courses. For fans looking to channel their inner SVG, this race was a masterclass in patience, precision, and the kind of relentless drive that separates champions from the pack—qualities that translate just as well to your weekend karting session as they do to the Cup Series podium.
