The Montreal Canadiens stormed back with a dominant second-period surge Thursday night, defeating the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 to seize a 3-2 lead in their second-round playoff series. The win puts Montreal one victory away from advancing to the semifinals for the first time since their 2021 Stanley Cup Final run.

Captain Nick Suzuki and Jake Evans delivered the knockout blows just 68 seconds apart late in the second period, turning a tight game into a commanding lead. Evans swept a loose puck past Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with 3:45 remaining in the frame to give Montreal its first lead at 4-3. Suzuki then capitalized on a power-play opportunity, converting a slick one-handed feed from Juraj Slafkovsky and beating Luukkonen through the legs from the lower right circle.

The Canadiens' top line finally found its rhythm, with Suzuki (one goal, two assists), Slafkovsky (three assists), and Cole Caufield all getting on the scoresheet. The trio had combined for just four goals and five assists through the first four games but exploded when it mattered most. Star defenseman Lane Hutson also contributed two assists, giving him six in four outings.

Cole Caufield, Josh Anderson, Ivan Demidov, and Alexandre Texier added goals for Montreal, which will host Game 6 on Saturday night. Goaltender Jakub Dobes settled in after a rocky start, allowing three goals on the first four shots he faced before finishing with 33 saves.

For Buffalo, Josh Doan, Jason Zucker, and rookie Konsta Helenius—playing in just his second career playoff game—found the back of the net. But the Sabres couldn't overcome Montreal's offensive explosion. Luukkonen was pulled after two periods, allowing five goals on 23 shots. Alex Lyon mopped up, surrendering one goal on three shots and potentially positioning himself to regain the starting role after losing it following a 6-2 loss in Game 3.

The game opened with a flurry of offense, as Buffalo and Montreal combined for five goals in the first 10:15, including Doan and Texier scoring just nine seconds apart. But the Canadiens' second-period surge proved decisive, and they'll look to close out the series in front of a raucous home crowd on Saturday.
