When Susie Wolff took the wheel as managing director of F1 Academy, she knew she was in for a challenge—but nothing could have prepared her for the eerie silence of an empty racetrack.

In a candid interview with Talks At Google, Wolff revealed the pivotal moment that nearly derailed the all-female racing series before it could gain traction. "I remember driving to the first race at Circuit Paul Ricard, not far from my home in Monaco, and thinking, 'This is strange—there are no cars around.' It was so quiet I wondered if I'd mixed up the dates. I've never been to such a deserted racetrack in my life."

What she found there was a series struggling to find its footing. Two team bosses immediately met her with bad news: "This isn't working. We can't find sponsorship, so we're out at the end of the year." Then came the drivers, confessing they couldn't pay their share of the budget. The original model had Liberty Media covering one-third of costs, with drivers and teams each responsible for another third—but with no audience in the grandstands, no sponsor was willing to invest.

"We had a flooded market of everyone searching for sponsorship, some asking for €5,000, some for €500,000. It was completely disjointed," Wolff explained. "No sponsor is going to pay to be in a race car racing in front of an empty audience."

That moment became a turning point. Wolff picked up the phone and called Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, with a blunt assessment: "This is not going to work."

But what followed was nothing short of a motorsport miracle. Through relentless determination and strategic vision, Wolff managed to secure the support of all 10 Formula 1 teams for the 2024 season—a feat she describes as a genuine "pinch-me moment." The result? F1 Academy now races alongside the Formula 1 calendar, giving these talented female drivers the visibility and backing they deserve.

For fans of racing and anyone who loves an underdog story, Wolff's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance—and a reminder that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with the right drive.
