The Toronto Maple Leafs may be facing a pivotal moment this offseason, and all eyes are on their superstar captain, Auston Matthews. With a new hockey operations tandem in John Chayka and Mats Sundin now at the helm, the franchise is expected to sit down with the 27-year-old center to clarify his intentions. Does Matthews see himself in Toronto for the remaining two years of his contract, or is he ready to move on after the team's turbulent, underperforming season?

If the latter proves true, the Leafs will likely ask for a list of preferred destinations—but according to insider Jeff Marek, one surprising team might already have the inside track. Speaking on the DFO Rundown, Marek suggested the Utah Mammoth (the relocated Arizona Coyotes) could jump to the front of the line if Matthews requests a trade. While many assume the Los Angeles Kings would be a natural fit, Marek argues they lack the assets to get a deal done. Utah, however, is "uniquely positioned."

"If Toronto has to make a decision on Auston Matthews, we all wonder about Los Angeles. But they don’t have the assets. You know who does? Utah," Marek said. "If that does happen (Matthews asking out), you can probably move Utah to close to, if not THE front of the line. If you’re gonna be a team that wants to rebuild, and rebuild quickly? Utah has some prime candidates and some outstanding young players that they can move."

Co-host Jason Gregor added that the Mammoth are looking to add size and skill up front—and at 6'3", 215 pounds, Matthews fits that description perfectly. His elite two-way game would instantly become the centerpiece of Utah's emerging core.

Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos also sees a natural connection. "Speculation in my inner circle has the Utah Mammoth watching this situation, as they have a few of Matthews’ close friends on their roster, including Clayton Keller." Matthews and Keller were teammates on the USHL U-18 team back in 2014-15. Beyond that, Matthews grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, attended Coyotes games as a kid, and has long cited franchise legend Shane Doan as one of his childhood heroes. Reuniting with that organization—even in its new home—would be an emotional and strategic fit.

For now, the hockey world waits to see what Matthews decides. But if he does want out, don't be surprised if the Mammoth are first in line to make a blockbuster pitch.
