In a thrilling Indian Premier League encounter, Chennai Super Kings delivered a masterclass in chasing, defeating Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to keep their playoff hopes alive. The star of the show was opener Sanju Samson, whose unbeaten 87 off just 47 balls turned a tricky chase into a comfortable victory.
The pitch at Chepauk offered plenty of challenges early on, and Samson showed remarkable composure in navigating the difficult conditions. After losing captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for just 6 and number three Urvil Patel for 17, Samson took his time, scoring only 16 runs from his first 19 deliveries. But once he found his rhythm, there was no stopping him. The India international exploded into action, smashing seven fours and six sixes as he took the Delhi bowling attack apart.
Samson found an able partner in Kartik Sharma, who contributed a steady 41 from 31 balls. Together, they put on an unbroken 114-run partnership that sealed the chase with 15 balls to spare—a clinical display of calculated aggression.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals' batting lineup showed promise but failed to capitalize. Their top four all reached double figures, yet none could push past 20. Sameer Rizvi top-scored with 40 not out, while South African Tristan Stubbs chipped in with 38. But the innings lacked the big partnerships needed to post a truly competitive total.
CSK's bowling attack was led by Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad, who finished with impressive figures of 2-22. England's Jamie Overton also made an impact, taking 1-5 in his solitary over, though he briefly left the field before returning to complete his spell.
The victory keeps CSK in the hunt for a playoff spot. While they remain sixth in the table, just two points behind a cluster of four teams—Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans—the five-time champions have shown they know how to peak at the right time. For Delhi Capitals, sitting seventh, the road to the playoffs is getting steeper by the match.
