Boxing fans, mark your calendars—January 2027 could bring one of the most anticipated showdowns in recent memory. Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue, fresh off a historic unanimous decision victory over Junto Nakatani this past weekend at the Tokyo Dome, is already eyeing his next challenge. And it's a big one.
Inoue, known as "The Monster," retained his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super bantamweight titles in what was billed as the biggest fight in Japanese boxing history. Now, attention shifts to a potential mega-fight against rising Mexican-American star Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez.
According to reports from Yahoo! Japan, confirmed by The Ring, talks are underway for a January 2027 clash in Japan, backed by Riyadh Season and boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh. The bout would take place in a massive stadium, with organizers aiming to break Japan's all-time attendance record. A special commemorative Ring belt is also reportedly in the works.
The matchup would see Inoue defend his super bantamweight titles against Rodriguez, who would move up in weight for the opportunity. Both fighters have expressed interest. "Of course I'll fight, but it's all about the timing," Inoue told The Ring. Rodriguez echoed the sentiment: "I think me against Inoue would definitely be one of the biggest fights in the lower weight divisions."
Before any super fight materializes, Rodriguez is scheduled to move up to 118 pounds next month to face Antonio Vargas for the WBA World Bantamweight title—a key stepping stone toward making the Inoue clash a reality. If all goes according to plan, boxing fans could witness a truly historic night in Japan.
