The New Jersey Devils have officially opened a new chapter in their front office, naming Sunny Mehta as the franchise's sixth General Manager. The announcement, made late Thursday, brings a familiar face back to the Garden State with a clear mission: to restore a championship pedigree.
For Mehta, a native of Wyckoff, New Jersey, this appointment is a homecoming in every sense. "This is a dream come true for a New Jersey kid who grew up watching Devils’ practices just 20 minutes away," Mehta stated. He expressed excitement about the team's young core and passionate fan base, adding, "I was fortunate enough to watch the New Jersey Devils raise three Stanley Cups and am excited to get to work to return to that level."
Mehta, 48, arrives with a formidable resume built over the last six seasons with the Florida Panthers, where he most recently served as Assistant General Manager and Head of Analytics. His tenure in Florida, which included back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances and a championship, provided a masterclass in building a modern, contending roster. Prior to that, he spent four seasons with the Devils from 2014-2018, giving him intimate knowledge of the organization's landscape.
Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer emphasized the significance of Mehta's winning experience. "Sunny’s familiarity with our organization and experience with a two-time Stanley Cup-winning team are characteristics that will serve as a foundation for future success," Blitzer said. "Our expectations are to be a perennial playoff team and compete for the Stanley Cup, and I look forward to Sunny leading us there."
This hire signals a decisive move for a Devils team looking to accelerate its timeline. With a treasure trove of young talent already on the roster and a cache of future assets, Mehta's analytical acumen and championship pedigree will be immediately put to the test as he shapes the next era of Devils hockey.
